Calcium Lactate
The chemical Calcium Lactate is a highly soluble white crystalline calcium salt that is produced through fermentation. It can typically be found in the form of a white free-flowing powder or a pill/tablet. Calcium lactate has a variety of uses including the treatment of medical conditions such as calcium deficiencies, rickets, osteoporosis, and latent tetany. Calcium lactate also extends the shelf life of cut fruits and prevents tooth decay. This chemical also has positive effects on women who are postmenopausal, pregnant or breastfeeding by providing more calcium to their bodies.
Calcium is a mineral found in foods and dairy products such as red beans, rhubarb and broccoli. Calcium is required by the human body for healthy teeth and bones. It also helps remove other minerals from the body for normal function. Calcium deficiencies can be caused by either inadequate calcium intake or a medical condition. Prolonged deficiencies lead to osteoporosis, brittle bones and weak teeth.

D-Limonene
Limonene is a colorless liquid hydrocarbon that is classified as a cyclic terpene. The rinds of many citrus fruits, such as the lemon, contain large amounts of limonene and this is where this chemical compound gets its name. The more common D isomer of limonene (D-limonene) smells strongly of oranges and is acquired commercially from citrus fruits through two main processes: centrifugal separation and steam distillation. D-limonene is used as a precursor to carvone in chemical synthesis and is present in many consumer products. Because this chemical smells like oranges, D-limonene is used in food manufacturing as well as in some natural and alternative medicines. D-limonene is said to alleviate gastroesophageal reflux disease as well as heartburn. Also, D-limonene is commonly used as a flavoring to mask the bitter taste of alkaloids, as an aroma in perfumes, as a botanical insecticide, and as a solvent added to cleaning products.
Limonene is currently being used as a solvent for cleaning oil off of machine parts at auto shops. Limonene is also used as a paint stripper on painted wood and as a solvent in model airplane glues. Limonene can be used to remove self-adhesive postage stamps from envelope paper. In addition, many cosmetic products contain this chemical.
At our chemical distribution company in Orlando, D-limonene is just one of the many products we offer. We also stock many tech-grade/water treatment chemicals, food/reagent-grade ingredients, sanitation chemicals, and much more. Maltodextrin
Maltodextrin is a complex carbohydrate that is produced from starch and usually occurs as an off-white hygroscopic spray-dried powder. Maltodextrin is commonly used as a food additive because it is easy to digest and tastes either somewhat sweet or nearly flavorless. For this reason, it is generally used in the production of sodas and candy. Maltodextrin can also be found as an ingredient in many other processed foods. Maltodextrin is a complex carbohydrate that can be hundreds of sugar molecules in length, which is much larger than the simple carbohydrate arrangement of glucose. Many soft drinks and other flavored beverages contain maltodextrin in their formulas so that they can have a lower amount of sugar on their nutrition facts labels. On the nutrition label, maltodextrin is included under the “Total Carbohydrate” heading, instead of the “sugars” label.
In order to assist the body with converting complex carbohydrates into energy, most naturally occurring complex carbohydrates often contain some vitamins and minerals that help with easier digestion and absorption into the body. However, maltodextrin contains almost no vitamins and minerals to assist with turning carbohydrates into energy. Therefore, consuming maltodextrin may actually reduce the amount of vitamins and minerals in the body because it uses more vitamins and minerals than it brings into the body. Over time, this can lead to a net decrease in a person’s vitamin and mineral levels.
At our chemical supply company in Orlando, Maltodextrin is just one of the many chemical products that we offer. We also stock many nutritional ingredients as well as personal care raw materials and USP ingredients. We at Bell Chem look forward to the opportunity to provide the highest quality products and service to your company. Give us a call at 407-339-BELL (2355).
Ascorbic Acid USP
Ascorbic acid USP (vitamin C) is a water-soluble vitamin. It occurs as a white or light yellow crystal or powder, but once it is exposed to light it gradually darkens in color. Ascorbic acid USP has an acidic taste. In a dry state, ascorbic acid USP is stable. However, in aqueous solutions ascorbic acid becomes very unstable and begins to oxidize immediately. This oxidation gradually fabricates a color change as well as a reduction in activity. Once these changes have occurred, the chemical becomes dehydroascorbic acid.
In humans, a deficiency of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) can cause scurvy. In humans, ascorbic acid is needed for collagen formulation and tissue repair. The chemical name, ascorbic acid, is derived from the Latin name of scurvy, scorbutus. The symptoms of ascorbic acid deficiency include depression and exhaustion, followed by the formation of spots on the skin, soft gums, and bleeding from the mucous membranes. However, if ascorbic acid is administered into the body, the symptoms of scurvy are reversed.
In the cosmetics industry, ascorbic acid is well known for its skin protection benefits as well as its anti-aging effects. It is a powerful antioxidant and skin whitening active ingredient. Ascorbic acid is best stabilized in an anhydrous lipid or silicone base.

Citric Acid
The conjugate base of citric acid occurs in the metabolism of virtually every living thing. At room temperature, citric acid is a white crystalline powder. It is used in a wide variety of industries including cleaning, dyeing, cosmetics, biology, pharmaceuticals, foods, beverages, personal care, industrial, construction, and even photography. Citric acid exists in a variety of fruits and vegetables, and especially in citrus fruits. Lemons, limes, and oranges possess extremely high concentrations of citric acid. As a food additive, citric acid is used for the flavoring and preservation of food and beverages, especially soft drinks. Citric acid can be used in food coloring to balance the pH level.
Citric acid can also be used as an environmentally-friendly cleaning agent. However, it is imperative to use caution when dealing with citric acid because it can cause severe irritation to the skin including minor skin burns.

Dextrose
Dextrose, also known as glucose, is chemically considered to be a simple sugar and is the main source of energy for the body. Glucose serves as the major source of energy for living cells. It is carried to each cell through the bloodstream. The body makes glucose from all three elements of food (protein, fat and carbohydrates), but mostly from carbohydrates. Doctors sometimes give dextrose to patients via fluids containing varied amounts of sugars when their bodies cannot get enough sugars. Dextrose is usually administered through injection and given at a doctor’s office, hospital or clinic. For example, when diabetic hypoglycemia is severe enough to cause unconsciousness, it may require intravenous dextrose.
Endurance athletes can benefit from taking dextrose. Also, those who are looking to maximize their muscle building and weight gain from workouts benefit from taking dextrose supplements after working out. Endurance athletes can get similar benefits by drinking a sports energy drink containing simple carbohydrates.
At Bell Chem in Orlando, dextrose is just one of the many products we offer. The Uses of Isopropyl Alcohol 99%
A solvent is a liquid, solid, or gas that dissolves another solid, liquid, or gaseous solute. The largest use for isopropyl alcohol is as a solvent, and usually as a cleaner. It can be used as an industrial cleaner for machinery and parts. Isopropyl alcohol is also found in many everyday products such as paint thinners, inks, general-purpose cleaners, disinfectants and windshield thawing agents. 99% isopropyl alcohol is used to clean surfaces and also to prevent infection from minor surface wounds like scrapes and cuts. It is frequently used at tattoo shops to clean bacteria off of the skin before a tattoo or piercing. However, it should never be used to clean a deep open wound or to clean the opening around a piercing after the piercing has been made.
IPA 99% is used heavily in the nail industry. The chemical is great for cleaning the surface of the client’s nails and producing maximum nail shine. For example, when applying the tremendously popular Shellac™ nail polish, the procedure details even include using a nail brush that is dipped in isopropyl alcohol 99% to detail the nails and to make them shine.
At Bell Chem in Orlando, isopropyl alcohol 99% is just one of the products we offer.
