Acetone

Acetone is a good solvent for a wide range of organic compounds because of its chemical composition and other general properties. The structure of acetone consists of a carbon atom surrounded by an oxygen atom and two CH3 groups. The physical properties of acetone include a high evaporation rate, low viscosity, and miscibility with water, as well as other organic compounds. About 30% of the world’s supply of acetone is used as a solvent, most commonly in the pharmaceutical industry. It is used as a denaturant in denatured alcohol and as a carrier in pharmaceutical drugs. Also, this tech-grade chemical has applications in the cosmetic, medical, food packaging, cleaning, and food additive industries. For example, acetone is often used as the primary agent in nail polish remover and is also used by make-up artists to help remove the skin adhesive from wigs and mustaches.

Be careful when using this chemical because it is known to be slightly toxic, colorless, and highly flammable. At temperatures greater than -4 degrees Fahrenheit (its flash point), acetone can catch on fire or explode.  Also, if a highly concentrated form of acetone is inhaled, it can cause throat irritation.
